I had the olive dish to start, this dish is simple but very well done, I enjoy some olives with a nice cold pint and a piece of bread to go with it, the oil lightly flavored with fresh herbs, although a better quality oil would have been nice it was still well done. After that i decided to try the fish and chips since it is VERY hard to find good fish and chips I thought if they understand how olives can be enjoyed they might do a good fish a chip, and I was right, homemade chips and a perfectly cooked fish. I will return.
Everyday has a special just like today has a live piano music. The atmosphere is perfect with great food. Duck was a little bit salty, but chicken tasted tender. Service was good enough. If the price was cheaper, we will definitely visit again!
I had such a great time at the Fat Duck! I come here every so often with friends to just have a few beers and enjoy their great food, I went a little out of my comfort zone this time and got the duck confit. It was definitely not a disappointment. The service just topped off our awesome experience. The waitress was super friendly and was really honest when we asked for her opinion on dishes. I do not understand why they have been receiving all these negative comments. I will continue coming to the fat duck for many years to come!
I opted for the Tuesday half price fish and chips...it seemed like a great deal until the plate arrived... the 2 pieces of mystery fish were disappointingly thin and dry, overcooked in a too greasy batter...tagging along was a small container of mushy peas - who knew they were so tasteless!...I felt everything on the plate lacked flavour and finesse... the service was good, the staff pleasant but that wouldn't be enough to get me to return!
I have to say that I find this place to have some absolutely delicious food! The service is a little slow but it is worth the wait. I usually get the curry chicken pie, which is served with a delicious mixed green salad. Recently I went and tried the tofu burger (don't usually like tofu at all), it was absolutely delicious! I can't recommend this place enough if you are looking for a quality meal!
This place is absolutely awesome. I love the atmosphere and they have great food to satisfy anyone's palette. The servers were super nice and informed me on her favourite dishes (which I tried and were great) and she was also very helpful with the menu. And as always the beer is fantastic as well.
I'm a little confused by most of these reviews...I had a great time at The Fat Duck! Their burgers are delicious, and I was informed by my waitress that everything is prepared in house! It's nice to know that my food wasn't prepackaged. My friend had the steak pie, and when I stole a bite, I was nothing but impressed. I found the staff very informative and friendly, still confused by most of the reviews about that. I'm so glad I checked this place out for myself... I will definitely be back!!
The Fat Duck has the best wings in Guelph and they are half price after nine every night! I love all the food but the best part of the Fat Duck is how many great beers are on tap. They are DELISH!
We went to this place twice. First time, the food was cold- the 2nd time I ordered the fish. It came, finally, with so much -parsley, you couldn't see the food. Both of us left most of our food on the plate. The only reason I would there would not to eat but to have a cold imprted beer, You can't murder that!
Being English I can compare the food here to a traditional Brit Pub - and yes, it is at least in the ballpark. True, they have tried to dress it up a bit - but coming from Britain I can tell you that the food over there is normally quite plain, and North American's traditionally like a bit more spice. I have yet to have a bad meal here, although I have experienced the bad service that other diners seem to be talking about. It looks like they never have enough staff on to accomodate their usually busy dining area - resulting in stressed out servers and impatient clientele. My biggest issue with this pub is the layout - it is small, as most pubs are, but the way the entryway is designed you walk right into the bar when you come in and have to fight through a throng of people to get to the hostess and ask for a table. The 'hallway' if you will, to the dining room is so narrow you often end up bumping the table on your right that you pass on your way...awkward! I love going here as it is a taste of home for me, but they definitely need to step up and get some more servers in there - the rest of their staff and their customers will thank them!
Was lookin forward to this, but let down. Service was alright I guess, ambiance etc, but the food was second rate. The fish over cooked and the fries , although nice and big and rectangular, jst werent cooked right or fully. Fish and chips and english food in general is is about as easy as KD. The mushy peas were just crap. The desert was alright. I would rather do everythng i had myself at home, at least I know it will be right. for fish n chps just go to the golden.
First time to the Fat Duck. Can't comment much on the menu because I only had an appetizer. First disappointment was the beer choices. Half of the things listed on the beer menu were not available....strange for a pub. Fresh bread came to table, nice touch to go with the app's. I was expecting 5-6 olives but got a huge plate full, enough to share with everyone on a nice warmed plate. I might try some food next time. Atmosphere was ok, i liked the privacy of the booths.
We have been twice. Mostly lured by the Sunday night trivia, which is a lot of fun. The first time we just got an app. It wasn't very good. Second time, we didn't even get offered a menu, had to tackle passing wait staff to get our drink orders in (no it wasn't that busy). Beer was good though.
We Have Tried & Tried to like this place and we do but the service that we get is the worst....last time the server all but slapped us in the face for asking for an item. The owners should be made aware of the bad service their waiters are giving and for this reason we will likely not go back....It was not the food it was the nasty waiters...ya if you expect to have kind service and nice people do not go to the Fat Duck....waiters are poor...not all but the three times we have been their we had one good waiter
After reading these reviews and deciding to visit, my husband and I were very disappointed. The atmosphere was dark and cozy, pretty comfortable. Our waitress was awkward. The 5 layer dip was overpriced and nothing to write home about. The burger was tasteless with very mushy sweet potato wedge style fries. My fish and chips were a shocker when they came to the table. The chips were 5 huge potato log style fries. The tartar sauce was bland. Why were we brought fresh bread with pub food? The menu was a confusing attempt to make pub food fancy. We will definitely not return.
I am not a kind of pub guy so I more like quite places. Good place to eat out, great service even though the place was pretty busy, our food took half an hour which was great, food was warm and enjoyable but the lentil soup. It seemed something was missing in lentil soup- kind a blank to me. Duck was a mouth watering, loved it. Overall it was a great experience, will go back for sure.
It is wonderful to have a nice pub like the Fat Duck in the south end of Guelph -- prior to FD's establishment we were stuck going all the way up to the Harvard No Frills plaza to hit Shakespeare's, which wasn't really worth the walk anyway. We're grad students, so we try to get where we can without driving and having a comparatively delicious place like FD so near by is pretty rad. I've been often, and would go back again. It is not quite as good as Frugal's or the Woolwhich Arms for basic pub fare, but FD's 'gastro' entrees are amazing. My favourite meal is the crispy duck, but sometimes it's better than others -- when the right balance is struck between the crispy outer and moister inner portions it's an amazing meal. Unfortunately this has only been the case one of the three times I've gotten it. More often than not the portion winds up over cooked and overcrispy, but it's still ok... and it is balanced out by the delicious sides (steamed veggies, garlic potatoes, etc). If you want a nice dinner in a pub atmosphere with good beer and you have a bit of cash to spend, this place is worth it... even if the service is somewhat spotty. The appetizers are either good or disappointingly lackluster, though, so FYI.
It was a busy night there so the service was kind a slow. Our food didn't take really that long. It was hot and delicious. We will be back soon.
Sat down in the bar area for a quick lunch with a friend. Staff told us about their "Fat Duck Lager" so we tried that, it was delicious. Both of us had the fish and chips and were both very happy with it. Nice moist fish with a beautiful sauce made by the chef. Tried a Nickelbrook Lager with the fish since we discovered the fish is cooked with it. Our server was very friendly and paid the perfect amount of attention to us, forget her name sadly. Great place will definatly see me for return business.
Several times we have eaten here and its always the same thing...the food is actually pretty good, but the service is so slow that it makes you feel like the owners are arrogant, in that they have still not inplimented a way to make waiting customers feel better....for example, tonight we asked to see the manager to resolve our extended wait for our food and he sent somone our to say he was too busy to meet with us but that we could comment another time to "Simon or Rose"........ I and other business associates I spoke to are very surprised by this arrogance...It is ashame as their food is quite good often but with what we and others through conversation have experienced - it is hard to want to go back to this situation.
