Where in Montréal do you go rooting for the perfect pièce de résistance, true architectural heritage, or furniture with stories? Caitlin Bailey, manager and curator of ArchMontréal, will introduce you to a collection spanning the 19th and 20th centuries.
“In terms of industrial salvage, there is nothing else like us,” Caitlin says. ArchMontréal breathes just enough warmth into their pieces to excite people’s imaginations and keep prices reasonable.
Caitlin takes visitors on tours through the ArchMontréal showroom, a many-chambered loft space in the Dompark building facing the Lachine Canal in Côte-Saint-Paul. It is like embarking on a furniture safari — something nudges your curiosity in every room, such as a 1940s-era Canadian government-issued filing cabinet. ArchMontréal decided it needed a sandblasting treatment to remove the dull beige paint.
“During the war, the Canadian government salvaged metals for munitions and one of the things they did was replace their metal administrative furniture,” Caitlin explains. An industrial tool locker has undergone the same refurbishment. “It would make a great display case for a store,” Caitlin remarks.
