A business plan written on a whim and four months later Philippe Forest and Lacey Dumler had whipped up Montreal’s first inner-city bouldering gym. Located in the Mile-End, Shakti Rock Gym welcomes men, women and kids of all levels to enter a climbing gym where there are no certification or equipment requirements, and there are no limits.
Lacey and Phil met as English teachers in South Korea, where Phil had been adopted by the members of a basement bouldering gym. Though the facility was tiny in comparison to the cavernous Shakti Rock Gym, Phil was touched by the climbing camaraderie. Even though neither party could speak each other’s language, they established bonds of trust and friendship. “They took me under their wings, and out into the countryside to climb real mountains,” recounts Phil, “and Lacey was along for the ride.”
Return to Montreal soil. Phil was looking for a life beyond the solitude of tree planting, and feeling a little listless housesitting during Christmas 2011. Lacey had returned from India and was ready for a project. Just for the fun of it, Phil drafted a business plan, and Lacey polished it.
Encouraged by inveterate memories of their Korean climbing adventures, a CDEC (Corporation de développement économique communautaire) start-up prize and guidance from a mentor, the reunited couple opened Shakti Rock Gym in April 2012.
Shakti Rock Gym is the “it spot” if you love bouldering, or if you’re looking for a new challenge in the city. Located in the Mile End, it’s a no-fuss facility that allows climbers to get on the wall right away. Unlike traditional rock climbing, there is no equipment necessary (harness, chalk), and there is no need to be belayed. The gym also offers introductory courses and special physical training sessions for those interested in perfecting their skills.
