Literary nerds rejoiced when Famous Last Words opened its doors last fall. The book theme can be found throughout, from the décor to the menu and the drinks themselves. Owner Marlene Thorne takes inspiration from all of her favourite novels when creating her unique cocktails.
Instagram went crazy when Figures opened this comic book shop in the front, restaurant in the back establishment earlier year. The cocktails are inspired by classic comic book and folklore characters, including the famous pitch black cocktail – Maleficent.
Jenn Agg opened her much anticipated Kensington Market wine bar, Grey Gardens to critical acclaim. It is safe to say it has an extensive wine list, accompanied by a menu of small plates, noodles and “medium” plates that include aged striploin. Grey Gardens oozes with a cool vibe that seems to follow Agg wherever she goes.
Brother’s is the type of bar that makes you feel like you walked into a chic Manhattan hotel. The space is small and narrow, but that only adds to its feeling of exclusivity. From the cocktail menu to the food menu, everything has a Mediterranean focus.
Open seven days a week, Otto’s Bierhalle has an endless selection of local and imported beers. The food is Bavarian inspired with items like spaetzle and schnitzel on the menu. It’s located on Queen West and owned by the people behind Otto’s Berlin Donner.
When Boxcar Social opened its companion bar, it was an instant hit. The carefully crafted cocktails have been the talk of Toronto, and with all the syrups and bitters made in house it’s not hard to see why. If you want to try something new, order the Jalapeno Mint Margarita, a refreshing take on a classic.
Swan Dive’s is the coolest dive bar in Toronto. The dimly lit room, dark furniture and regulars at the bar have helped this spot become a go-to neighbourhood bar.
Hidden behind Bar Begonia, Madame Boeuf is a flea market and bar in one. The outdoor space serves a revolving cocktail menu, alongside a food menu of burgers and shrimp cocktail. It is owned by restauranteur Anthony Rose.
Good Fortune has been gaining a following since it opened its doors a little less than a year ago. Located in the basement of La Carnita, the restaurant is eclectic and one of the coolest looking bars in the city. With an underground setting, Good Fortune makes you feel like you just discovered the hippest bar in Toronto.
