Edmonton places where meat is embraced

If you`re like me, and meat is everything to you, you can satisfy your carnivore instincts at these Edmonton restaurants. They all make beef, pork and poultry the stars of the menu, as they should be.

Grillbillys Smokehouse BBQ Inc

1
8310 Roper Rd Nw, Edmonton, AB T6E 6E3

This barbecue joint started as a food truck and expanded into a restaurant after gaining infamy for its smoked bacon bombs. All of the meat here is smoked over Okanagan apple wood. The chicken is bathed in buttermilk, the ribs are coated with a special sauce and the beef brisket is smoked for at least 12 hours. If you can’t choose between pulled pork, smoked Andouille sausage, beef brisket, chicken, ribs or bacon bombs, go for the Big Daddy combo.

Rostizado

102-10359 104 St NW, Edmonton, AB T5J 1B9

There are so many delicious, meaty options here but a guaranteed great choice is the platters. They’re served family-style here, which equals heaps of authentic Mexican cuisine. There’s dry-rubbed chicken from Four Whistle Farms (you can go for a whole, half or quarter bird), served with rosti-papas, tortillas and salsa. Or you can pig out on a chicken and pork platter. Of course, you can always get your fill of pork shoulder in the form of some tasty gorditas.

Meat Barbecue Ltd

8216 104 St Nw, Edmonton, AB T6E 4E6

Meat, get in my belly now. As in, the entire menu from Meat, a smokehouse restaurant that opened here in 2014, get in my belly now. Dig in to meaty delights like brisket, fried chicken, smoked chicken, pulled pork, BBQ ribs and Andouille sausage. Everything can be ordered by the pound or half pound (sausage is by the link) and sides come family style for sharing. But why bother with sides when you can make a meat castle, then eat it?

Sloppy Hoggs

4
9563 118 Ave NW, Edmonton, AB T5G 0N9

The only complaint I`ve ever heard about Sloppy Hoggs is that it is nearly impossible to finish a meal there because there is so much meat. But if you embrace that fact, and view it as a challenge, the abundance of meat can be beautiful. Bring a group of friends and tackle the Game Day Platter: ribs, chicken, pulled pork and brisket. Smoked over a blend of apple and maple wood, the meat has a more subtle taste than some other smokehouses.

Wow Pop Chicken

5
3350 Parsons Rd NW, Edmonton, AB T6N 1B5

Good fried chicken doesn`t have to come from a fast food chain with a southern colonel for a representative. It can come from other sources, like Coco Chicken. You know they take their chicken seriously because it`s right there in the name. While the place isn`t much to look at, and the surroundings are questionable, all of that can be forgiven in the name of delicious, droolworthy fried chicken. Their birds are all free range, with no hormones or MSG.

In April 2016, Conde Nast Traveler's Readers' Choice Awards for the Best Pizza in the World: The Top 14 Cities for Pizza placed Edmonton at number eight on the list. With a diverse number of fantastic pizzas to choose from, including hand-tossed, wood-fired pies with white or red sauce and fun toppings ranging from pineapple to pine nuts, you're sure to find one you adore. Buon appetito!
