Rock climbing is excellent exercise, but it's not always possible to locate a good mountain or beach to stretch your muscles. In Edmonton, you'll find both regular gyms with climbing walls and dedicated rock climbing spaces, where you can enjoy the thrill of climbing and practise your moves for when you're able to head outdoors.

As one of the more popular rock climbing gyms in town, Vertically Inclined offers several climbing courses from which to choose; the upside-down cave is an exciting challenge for those who have advanced beyond the basic walls. The friendly staff is always available to instruct and make sure you're well informed, even if it's your first time.

Rock Jungle Fitness

The climbing area of this gym is next to the weights and Cross Fit space, so it gives an interesting feel to the gym. While the dressing and showering facilities are relatively basic, the climbing walls are high quality and offer a range of courses, including upside-down climbing options. Bouldering is also available. With more than 10,000 square feet of climbing space, you'll be busy for a while.

Sturgeon Valley Athletic Club

The sizable gym at this athletic club is designed to make you feel at home; the children's area is where you'll find a range of fun activities, including a climbing cave for kids up to nine years old. Adults will enjoy climbing the Jacob's ladder at their own pace. There are often challenges to climb a certain amount in a specific number of days, such as the height of Mt. Everest in 60 days, which adds a little spice to the challenge.

Friendly instructors are essential for beginners, and Urban Uprising has excellent staff who are always there to help customers in need. You'll be well trained and directed to the right wall for your level. There are several spaces for climbing, and the prices are more affordable than many gyms, making this a popular spot to get your climb on.

If you have children who are 12 and under, the three-metre climbing wall at Millennium Place is a great spot to try out their new-found adventure climbing skills. Kids of all ages will enjoy scaling the handholds on the wall, although there are some lower climbing activities available, as well. Children can also enjoy bouldering in the space.

West Edmonton Mall Property Inc

This exciting rock climbing gym is located inside the West Edmonton Mall and features three different skill levels. You have to be at least 91 centimetres high if you want to climb at Rock ‘N Wall, although you'll find there is no age limit. The place can get crowded, particularly on weekends, so plan to head there early or attend on an off-day.

University Of Alberta

For state-of-the-art climbing walls, the Wilson Climbing Centre is a nice, affordable place to check out. You can rent the equipment you need, take classes and even get tested on the various climbing methods here. There is more than 7,000 square feet of climbing in the High Wall Loft and an additional 2,700 square feet of space for bouldering.
