At Latin-inspired Morala Specialty Coffee, chef and owner Miriam Rangel uses her own Mexican family recipes to create authentic spinach, chicken-chipotle, beef-vegetable, cheese and lamb empanadas. Pair your main with a freshly baked, house-made pastry such as chocolate chip puffs or an empanadita. Wash it all down with a Mayan hot chocolate or a cup of Happy Goat Coffee. Served on weekends only, Miriam’s homemade waffles are highly recommended.
Centrally located on the corner of Fourth and Bank Street, this great organic bakery and breakfast spot has an unassuming help-yourself-to-a-table vibe. Known for its good vegetarian options, the portions are satisfying and plates reasonably priced. The crepe bar features white or buckwheat flour options with fruit and whipped cream toppings. Options include hearty and healthful vegetarian omelets, freshly baked sweets and grilled sandwiches on homemade bread. Amazing specialty coffees are served in large latte mugs with ample frothing.
This upscale and intimate spot is perfect for celebrating a special occasion or the fact that it’s the weekend. And, if you’re a sucker for a good eggs Benny, this place is for you. Choose from Benedict dishes served with duck confit, lobster, kale-lemon-Parmesan as well as steak. Gluten-free breakfast entrees include crepes and Belgian waffles with vanilla-infused maple syrup and fruit compote. Also try the generous bangers and hash, French toast stuffed with Brie and caramel cream cheese or the frittata du jour. The mimosa brunch cocktail is recommended.
A mainstay on Bank Street in the Glebe for more than 20 years, this award-winning Montreal-style bagel bakery and restaurant is located a stone’s throw from Landsdowne. Bagels are made fresh in plain view, and the shop is open 24 hours a day. Among its bagel deli sandwiches, go for the bacon-and-egg-topped breakfast bagel, and the house-special smoked salmon with cream cheese, tomato, onion and garlic olives. Freshly baked pastries include both chocolate and cinnamon puffs as well as Nanaimo bars.
At the newly renovated Landsdowne Park, home of the Ottawa Redblacks, try the banana pancakes with smoked bacon, steak and eggs or huevos rancheros with free-range eggs, black beans and salsa roja. Finish it all off with churros (cinnamon doughnut sticks that are the Mexican equivalent to deep-fried, sugar-cinnamon beavertails).
The elegantly rustic interior and the warm welcome you receive from rapper-turned-restaurateur Liam Vainola puts you instantly at ease in Erling’s Variety. Choose from a splendid eggs Benedict with house back bacon, poached eggs on sourdough with a creamy hollandaise sauce, a side of home fries and homemade ketchup. Also, try the egg and steak or mussels and frites featuring smoked tomato broth prepared with white wine, chorizo and freshly chopped basil. Go for a glass of vino while you’re at it.
One of four locations, Flapjack’s in the Glebe is a pancake-pushing food truck that serves ’em hot and piled high. Find it tucked in the courtyard behind Mrs. Tiggy Winkles. Choose from thick, oatmeal or buttermilk batter mixed with your choice of blueberries, back bacon and much more, then top with additional selections including bananas, Nutella and cream cheese. Eat outdoors on log tables while seated on log chairs.
