The pretzels in this bright Chinatown café are accompanied on the menu by other German treats like currywurst and sauerkraut – and, of course, beer (in steins) and schnapps. The pretzels are served warm with house-made mustard, or as part of a pretzel board that includes “stinky cheese sauce” along with pickles and cured meats.

The Deutsches Haus restaurant at the Vancouver Alpen Club is the closest thing you’ll find to an authentic German beer hall without leaving Vancouver – and has been for 80 years. Founded in 1935 as a social club for Vancouver’s German community, the club is now best known for its restaurant, which serves a hearty German menu of bratwurst, pork hock, schnitzel and, you guessed it, pretzels.
