It's easy to turn a successful fishing trip into dinner if you know how to clean, gut and cook fresh fish. Here are some easy tips that can help you cook your latest catch.

How to cook freshly caught fish

Make sure it's safe to eat

Before cooking your fish, you should make sure that you are fishing in a place where the fish are safe to eat.

  • Whether it's freshwater or saltwater, the fishing hole should be full of clean water that hasn't been contaminated.
  • You should also plan to clean your fish within an hour or two of catching it. It will spoil quickly if it's left out longer than that.
  • Keep the fish on ice until you are ready to head home and start cooking.

Cleaning the fish

  • To get started cleaning the fish, cover a table with newspaper so that it's easy to clean up the mess later.
  • Use plastic gloves so your hands don't get covered in scales, and make sure you have a sharp cutting knife.
  • Hold the fish firmly on the table and use a butter knife to scrape the scales from the tail toward the head until they all come off.
  • Rinse the fish.

Gutting the fish

  • In order to gut the fish, use a sharp knife and insert it into the back end of the fish toward the tail.
  • Bring the knife forward around the bottom of the fish, cutting a straight line from its tail toward its head.
  • Open the cavity and pull out the entrails. Set them aside to discard and use a hose or faucet to rinse out the inside of the fish.
  • You can then remove the head just above the gills. Now the fish is ready to be cooked.

Cooking the fish

  • Fish can be cooked in a variety of ways. Some people like to cook the fish whole while others prefer to fillet it.
  • It can be seasoned in many ways, such as with garlic and lemon or with a tomato-based sauce, and can be fried, baked or broiled.
  • You can experiment with different recipes until you find one you like. Just make sure the fish is fully cooked through before eating it.

Catching and cooking your own fish is a really rewarding experience, just be sure you fish in a safe area and know how to properly clean and prepare it before enjoying your delicious meal.
