Mini snow globes: 3 steps to making a fun DIY Christmas decoration

Get festive this holiday season by making mini snow globes to decorate your home or give as gifts. They're so simple to make that the kids will be able to join in the fun, too.

What you'll need

  • Empty baby food jars
  • Epoxy adhesive
  • Silver glitter or grated Styrofoam
  • Spray paint in the colours of your choice
  • Small figure to put inside the globe
  • Distilled water
  • Glycerin

1. Prepare the jars and lids

  1. Clean the empty baby food jars thoroughly, removing the labels and any glue that may remain on the glass.
  2. Spray the lids of the baby food jars with festively coloured spray paint. Gold works well, but any holiday colour will do.
  3. Once the lids are dry, flip them over to expose the bottom of each lid.

2. Install your figurine

Put a small drop of epoxy on the centre of the inside of the lid, and a small drop of epoxy on the bottom of the little figurine that you want to put inside your snow globe.

  • Some great figures to use in your snow globes are small plastic toys such as animals or trees from holiday sets.
  • Characters and plastic snowmen from craft shops are also good, and they don't have to be holiday themed at all if you want to enjoy the snow globe in your home all year-round.

Glue the figure to the inside of the lid and leave it to dry for 24 hours.

3. Add the snow

  1. Place a tablespoon of glitter inside the jar.
  2. Fill the jar with room-temperature distilled water.
  3. Add five drops of glycerin, which helps suspend the glitter slightly in the solution, and put the lid with the glued-in figure on the jar.

If you're after a traditional, snowy look, use grated Styrofoam instead of glitter. Experiment with different looks by changing the themes in each new snow globe you make.

Other holidays

While these are perfect for Christmas, they're also great for other holidays, too. Just change the colour of the glitter and the type of plastic figure you use to create a fun mini snow globe for every holiday and special occasion.

Party favours

These snow globes make great favours, especially for children's parties. If you plan on giving these to children, make sure that you seal the jars tightly to prevent them from being opened accidentally.
