“I make cakes for a living, so I’m usually in a pretty good mood!” Darcy Scott says. Her exuberance and passion are easy to see. Darcy took over Whimsical Cake Studio in early 2014 after running a successful Kickstarter campaign and receiving a loan from Alberta Women Entrepreneurs. The studio is now a hub for delicious baked goods and culinary innovation.
Darcy is quick to mention some of her most challenging projects, including a life-sized replica of the Stanley Cup. She’s also proud of the brush with fame she experienced when Ashton Kutcher tweeted about her fully edible Star Wars Ewok village. But Whimsical Cake Studios doesn’t just do custom designs: they also feature an assortment of cupcakes, cookies and cake pops, not to mention one of Darcy’s own inventions – cake bombs. “They’re basically an inside-out cupcake dipped in chocolate,” she says.
You can see some of the beautiful handiwork of Whimsical Cake Studio right when you walk in the door. A glass display case shows off cupcakes piled high with icing, and a beautiful cake decorated with ornate flowers, but it’s probably the flavours inside that will be particularly memorable. They even have a matcha buttercream frosting that’ll literally be the icing on your cake.
There are so many amazing flavours to choose from here, but Whimsical Cake Studio is mostly known for their delectable vanilla velvet cupcakes. The bakery eschews using the red dye that is common in other red velvet cupcakes, resulting in a creamy vanilla velvet cupcake topped with the cream cheese icing that is at the heart of any good red velvet treat. Other flavours range from spiced carrot cake to chocolate cake with Earl Grey Italian buttercream icing. All of their cupcakes are also available in miniatures.
The bakers prepare some of the most incredible sculptured cakes around and pre‐designed but customizable cakes, not to mention wedding cupcakes (tiers of cupcakes instead of the traditional cake slices for your guests). And of course, you can have them create virtually anything you can imagine.
