FOOD: OK, so everyone I know who has been to GP have ranted and raved about their egg rolls so of course I had to give them a try. The egg rolls themselves are pretty tasty and the accompanying home made plum sauce sets them off perfectly. I wouldn't say they are the "best' but they're definitely worth a try. The next dish I tried was their house specialty fried rice. I don't know the name off-hand but it had generous portions of shrimp, chicken and pork. The portion itself was "adequate" at best. I will say that this dish of fried rice was very tasty indeed. The price was something like $17.00 which is crazy expensive! We also tried the Chow Mein which reminded me of the old-school way where the bean sprouts were the main attraction and the sauce was very good as well. The other dishes consisted of spare ribs (typical taste as in everywhere else) and the obligatory S&S Chicken Balls which again tasted like they do everywhere else. Good, but not spectacular. I will be back, there's no question about that as I do enjoy the egg rolls quite a bit. They're expensive but that's only because of the media portraying them as the next best thing to godliness. SERVICE: I found the service quite rushed and impatient. Our waiter seemed annoyed that we wanted extra time with the menu which he gave us but he returned less than a minute later to see if we were ready to order. Did I mention there were only 6 other people in the restaurant at that time? So why he felt a need to rush us is unexplainable. I don't think the wait staff are permitted to smile as I have yet to see any of them ever smile while taking an order from a table. In fact, in a roundabout way, the service reminded me of that classic Seinfeld episode with the Soup Nazi. My youngest son summed it up best (He was 12 years old at that time) when he said he felt like the waiter was going to slap him if he didn't say his order right. :) The washrooms are a ways away from the dining area. One must go down a very steep flight of stairs and then a long hallway. Almost felt like I need a map to find it. Not the cleanest washrooms either. Other than that, as much as it reads like it was a negative experience, I will be back only because the food is tasty. it's all expensive for no real good reason that I can think of. The staff really should have a better attitude though as it almost feels like I'm bothering them by coming in for a bite to eat. Oh, and make sure to keep a grip on your dish while eating because of the waiter sees it getting low, he'll likely come by and try and take it away even though there's still food on the plate. Like i said, it feels rushed all the time.
Absolutely Terrible....My family and I decided on this establishment for a family pre christmas get together. Huge Mistake. We made reservations 6 weeks in advance for 20 people. Told them at the time, two people are in wheelchairs, they stated 'NO PROBLEM' i guess not for them...however; the moron on the phone failed to tell us that they are NOT handicap accessible. The placed us not in the dining room but in a back room, set up with 'picnic tables' and folding 'metal chairs' also, set up two tables...this way we could not all sit together. Then the waiter stated, 'one bill for 20 people' I'd had enough of this place and we hadnt even ordered. I told them 'separate bills ....or we walk' looking, back...we should have left. The food was at best, considered average. The price charged...double what it was worth. Also, watch your bills...they were adding beer and food to the different bills. Needless to say, we will not be back. Too make it worse, they brought our food at 5:30 then told us there was another party coming at 6pm, we could not finish our food and had to take it with us. Do you think they got a tip?
Apparently this place has been a staple in Ottawa for a long time. I recently was at an event that had food from Golden Palace served. Usually people are somewhat shy about going back for seconds. Not this time! The food was nothing short of amazing. Will definitely have to check out the location next time i'm in town
Staff is rude and are laughing at customers in Mandarin (took a few courses over the years). They are disrespectful and although the food is OK, the prices are way too high. Average food, high prices and loser waiters, why are you going there?
The Golden Palace has just received two new, life long customers. I've almost given up hope, that for really good Chinese food in Ottawa, one would have to either travel to Montreal, or simply order a Pizza. I would have to describe my very first dining experience at The Golden Palace as simply amazing. Well ok, maybe not amazing, but pretty darn close. Well lets start with the most important part, the food. It was without a doubt the best Chinese food, I've ever had, bar none. They diffenetly can indeed stand behind the quality of their food, not to mention their egg rolls, which I'm sure any chinese restuarant, within a hundred mile radius, would find hard to match. Moving on to the infamous "the waitors in their red outfits ", a little stand offish, yes, but I would hardly say rude. As a matter of fact, we gave our waiter, a pretty detailed order, the man didn't even write anything down, and got everything exactly right! There must be some sort of "DoJo" for chinese food waiters, and these men are the Ninja's of the serving world, or serving arts, to be exact. Lastly, with the ambiance, and decor, I would concur that this particular establishment hasn't seen a coat of paint, since Trudeau's first term in office, however, it could only prove that the management, felt the need to concentrate on the the real reason people choose to dine at The Golden Palace, and that would be, the FOOD...not to mention the eggrolls. The Golden Palace, a dining experince, Thirty two years in the making.

There’s one satisfying constant at this third-generation old-school Chinese restaurant: the egg rolls. They’re open ended, which means a crispy finish to the tasty, generous filling. They’re so popular that folks pick up batches for friends before heading out of town. The rest of the menu is made up of standard Canadian-Chinese fare, and the service is sometimes brusque, but those egg rolls are worth the visit.
