Meet the owner

George Kiriakou, his brother Peter, and his two cousins grew up at The Wexford Restaurant. As kids, they washed dishes and today, they are the third generation carrying on the family legacy of this friendly neighborhood diner. Situated at the Wexford Heights Shopping Plaza in Scarborough, The Wexford has been serving customers homemade food for more than 55 years. Some of the same customers who walked through the doors when George was a young lad still come here today to eat — or just have a cup of coffee and chat.

“Toronto has become so homogenous, it’s easy to get lost,” says George. “You come in here, and it’s like you are family. We say ‘hi’ to everyone who walks in the door, we talk to them and we listen. People feel a connection when they walk through our doors.”

After immigrating to Canada from Greece in 1958, George’s grandfather and brother started the business. Later, George’s father Anthony (now semi-retired) took the business to another level — expanding the restaurant in the 1980s. Seating went from 50 to more than 200. There is even a private room where local businessmen and women can conduct meetings. Photos of the neighbourhood and local sports heroes adorn the walls, jockeying for space. George points out that the vintage photographs tell the story not just of the restaurant, but also of the neighbourhood.

The two of us had ham & eggs, both with a coffee. It was ok but barley. The bill came to over $16.00. He said it included a newspaper. When we told him we did't read or want a newspaper the price still stayed over &16.00. We may have been ripped off but we won't ever go back!!! Kerry...
