Giota Nikolopoulos’ New York Café has been a Greektown landmark for decades, serving hearty diner fare since 1942 at the corner of Broadview and Danforth. Stepping into the two-room restaurant, housed inside a heritage building, is like being transported back in time: the formica tables, retro archways and dark paneling are reminiscent of days gone by.
As the owner, Giota wears many hats. She still serves customers (as does her mom), but also manages all the other aspects of running a business, such as managing staff, many of whom have worked at New York Café for decades. Giota says she is well-suited for the business. “I wouldn’t be okay in an office job,” she says. “I like helping people and the constant excitement.”

I consistently find the food of superior quality for a neighbourhood diner. Good consistency across the menu and an excellent brunch option with a separate breakfast menu.
The drinks tasted like they actually had booze in them! They carry Woody's cooler which is yummy. The food was great. They have real turkey breast in their clubs, the veggie pita is delicious and the eggs benny super yummy! I must say the hollandaise sauce is creamy, not for the weak, with pork chop-like back bacon.Portions are insane. And exremely cheap. The waitstaff was efficient, and pleasant. We are definitely going back!
I read on the internet that they had a selection of vegetarian plates but this was not true. I settled for the rice, salad and potato. The salad had too much dressing. The rice and potato is nothing to go back for. Don, who ordered the lasagna could not find any meat in it. The place was slightly busy when we were there and the staff did not know how to handle the rush.
We love eating there, it's like family, everyone knows you,the staff is fabulous and friendly even when they are so busy! The food is always so generous and you never leave feeling hungry. Only thing is they should get debit.(It is convenient) Other than that it's a charm. Oh and CHEAP!!!
We really enjoyed our lunch there. It has a cosy atmosphere, prompt and friendly service.(which is rare in most diner style restaurants)And did we mention very reasonable prices for the amount of food you get. They also have added a patio in the front which will be great for when the warm weather comes around. We are so glad we took our friends advice and ate there!
