This restaurant is beautiful and the food quality is very high, however after the first year of business, the portion sizes went way down (smallest in Whitby for sure). Poor value for your money and rarely any specials offered.
Unassuming from the outside, but beautiful and serene inside. Food was presented beautifully, flavours were lovely, and Amazing quality for the price, we will definitely be back with a larger group.
I LOVE SWEET BASIL THAI CUISINE. The restaurant is very clean and the food is amazing! The atmosphere is very calm and pleasant and the table decorations are gorgeous. I've been there quite a few times and the pad thai is veryyyyy goooddd and the COCUNUT ICE CREAM IS AMAZING. The waiters are very nice and respectful and its just a wonderful place to eat!! :D
As foolish as it may be to judge a book by its cover, it would be equally nonsensical to assume the small size and quaintness of Sweet Basil Thai from the external reduces the delectable culinary experiences one can take part inside. The atmosphere and decoration is top notch and to the utmost perfection; calm, soothing music sublimely accompanies the visual component of the decor. Subtle stucco bricks adorn the walls, complimenting furnishings made of soft leather, dark oak surrounding spotless Formica tabletops. Motifs and symbols in concord with traditional Thai culture are evident throughout the restaurant in beautiful paintings, sculptures, and other works of art. The lighting is superb and enhances the completeness of the atmosphere the restaurant offers: classy, clean, lush, but ultimately accessible. The food simply speaks for itself. As is traditional with the pillars of Thai cuisine (resting in a delicate balance between salty, spicy, sour, and bitter), it blends the showmanship and cleanliness of high cuisine while sticking to its traditional Thai roots. This manifests itself in the Pad Thai, given in a very generous portion and garnished with the usual crushed peanuts and green onion, bursts tantalizingly in one's mouth in an unparalleled explosion of flavour and gusto. The curries were also scrumptious and filling, each delicately served and garnished to perfection with signature basil leaves, tender on the mouth but absolute on the flavour. The Thai green curry in particular was exceptional and outstanding; the delicate yet firm coconut undertones carried perfectly over the steamed jasmine rice it was paired up along, with an added crunch provided by the bell peppers and sweet baby corn. All in all, Sweet Basil Thai is an experience absolutely worth repeating. The atmosphere, friendliness of the staff, and the food itself were all of utmost perfection and I could not have left the restaurant with a bigger smile or a fuller stomach, palate satisfied and mind pleasantly surprised. If you're a fan of Thai food or just good food and an amazing time in general, Sweet Basil Thai is to-the-dot the signature Thai and one of the all-around best restaurants in all of Durham region.
I've been to almost every Thai restaurants in Whitby and I say this with great confidence that this place is simply the best. The food here is absolutely fantastic, especially their pad thai and green curry. The place is very tidy, beautifully decorated and elegant. The price is fair and reasonable. Aside from that, the service is attentive and friendly. I love it there so much, I go there once or twice a week so visit Sweet Basil and I guarantee you won't be disappointed.
